How to type in Puthina

  1. Type your text in the Kannada typing editor by spelling words in English, e.g. “namaskara” becomes ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ. Then press Copy.
  2. Install Puthina (steps below) and open Word, LibreOffice, Photoshop or any app that uses your computer's fonts.
  3. Paste the text, select it and choose Kar Puthina from the font list.

Windows
Right-click the downloaded TrueType file and choose "Install", or "Install for all users" to share it with every account. Restart open apps to see Kar Puthina.
Mac
Double-click the file to open Font Book, then click "Install Font". Kar Puthina is then available in every app.

Puthina was published by the Government of Karnataka through its Kannada Siri project for public use. The font file points to that project for its licence terms, so check them before commercial use.

Yes. Puthina is a Unicode font: it covers 86 Kannada characters at their standard code points, so Kannada text typed anywhere - including our online editor - displays correctly in it.

What is Puthina called in Word and other apps?

After installing it, look for "Kar Puthina" in the font menu of Word, LibreOffice, Photoshop or any other app that uses your computer's fonts. Web apps such as Google Docs cannot see fonts installed on your computer. That is the name stored inside the font file, and it can differ slightly from the name on this page.
