How the typing tutor works
- Place your fingers on the home row: A S D F and J K L ;. Your thumbs rest on the space bar.
- Click the lesson box and type what it shows. The next key is lit up on the keyboard below.
- A wrong key flashes red; press the right one to carry on. Every wrong key counts against your accuracy.
- At the end you see your speed and accuracy. Reach 90% to pass, then go on to the next lesson.
What the lessons teach
The course starts with F and J, the keys with bumps your index fingers find without looking, and adds two keys at a time across the home row, then the top and bottom rows, capital letters with Shift, and the number row.
Each lesson drills its new keys, mixes them with the keys you already know, and finishes with real words you can type with them. The last two lessons are common English words and full sentences, the step before a timed English typing test.
Typing Tutor: common questions
How do I learn touch typing?
Rest your fingers on the home row (A S D F with the left hand, J K L ; with the right), keep your eyes on the screen and press each key with the same finger every time. Start with the first lesson and move on once you pass it; a few minutes every day works better than one long session.
When is a lesson passed?
When you finish it with at least 90% accuracy. Accuracy counts every wrong key you press, even if you then press the right one, so slow down until you stop making mistakes. Speed comes with practice.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, on this device. Passed lessons get a tick in the lesson list and stay there when you come back. Nothing is sent anywhere and there is no sign-up.
Can I use it on a phone?
The lessons need a physical keyboard, because they teach which finger presses which key. On a phone or tablet, connect a Bluetooth or USB keyboard.
What should I do after the lessons?
Take a timed test to measure your speed. The English typing test scores you the way government typing exams do, in words per minute and key depressions per hour.
