How the Hindi typing tutor works

  1. Pick Mangal (InScript) or Kruti Dev (Remington), and the first lesson.
  2. Rest your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;), click the lesson box and type what it shows.
  3. The next key is lit up on the keyboard below, with the Hindi it types. A wrong key flashes red.
  4. Reach 90% accuracy to pass, then go on to the next lesson. The last lessons are Hindi words and sentences.

What the lessons teach

Each lesson adds two keys, starting from F and J on the home row, then the top and bottom rows, Shift, and the number row. In InScript, vowel signs are on the left hand and consonants on the right, so the home row alone already types words like कर, तक and पर. Each lesson ends with real Hindi words that use only the keys learnt so far.

When you finish, measure your speed with the timed Hindi typing test, which scores you the way typing exams do. To write Hindi without learning a keyboard, use the Hindi typing editor.

Hindi Typing Tutor: common questions

Should I learn Mangal (InScript) or Kruti Dev?

Check your exam notice. Most central government typing tests, including SSC, use Unicode Hindi typed with InScript (often called Mangal). Some state exams and courts still test Kruti Dev on the Remington layout. Both are taught here: pick the keyboard above the lessons.

Do I need a Hindi keyboard or the Kruti Dev font?

No. Type on your normal English keyboard; the tutor shows the Hindi each key types. The on-screen keyboard shows the Hindi letter on every key, so you learn where each letter is.

When is a lesson passed?

When you finish it with at least 90% accuracy. Every wrong key you press counts against your accuracy, even if you then press the right one, so slow down until you stop making mistakes.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, on this device, separately for InScript and Kruti Dev. Passed lessons get a tick in the lesson list. Nothing is sent anywhere and there is no sign-up.

Can I use it on a phone?

The lessons need a physical keyboard, because they teach which finger presses which key. On a phone or tablet, connect a Bluetooth or USB keyboard.
