Keyboard

Type with InScript keys on an English keyboard, or switch on your computer's own Hindi keyboard.

How the Hindi typing test works

  1. Choose the keyboard your exam uses, a passage and a time from one to ten minutes.
  2. Click the box under the passage and start typing. The clock starts with your first key.
  3. The word you are on is highlighted. Keep going until the time is up or the passage is done, or press Finish now.
  4. See your net and gross speed, accuracy, and the passage with every wrong, missed and extra word marked.

How your result is scored

Hindi typing exams measure speed in keystrokes: five key presses, spaces included, make one word. So gross speed is keystrokes divided by five, per minute, and only the keys still in your text count.

Every wrong word, missed word and extra word is one mistake, and net speed takes one word per minute off the gross speed for each. Your typing is lined up with the passage word by word, so one skipped word is one mistake rather than throwing off every word after it. If time runs out in the middle of a word, that half-typed word is not counted.

Exams differ in the details: some count spacing or punctuation slips as half mistakes, and each sets its own minimum speed. SSC exams, for example, ask for 30 words per minute in Hindi typing. Check your exam's notice for its exact rules.

Mangal, InScript, Kruti Dev and Remington

Mangal is a Unicode Hindi font, and Mangal typing tests are typed with the InScript layout that comes with Windows. Open the InScript key chart under the test to see where every letter is.

Kruti Dev is an older font laid out like the Remington Hindi typewriter; Remington GAIL types Unicode with the same keys. If you learned on a typewriter, choose Kruti Dev here. Need to move text between the two? Use the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter.

Just need to write Hindi, not practise for an exam? The Hindi typing editor turns English spelling into Hindi as you type.

Hindi Typing Test: common questions

Which keyboard should I choose, InScript or Kruti Dev?

Choose the one your exam uses. Mangal / Unicode typing tests usually use InScript, the government-standard Hindi layout. Kruti Dev and Remington GAIL tests use the Remington typewriter layout; pick Kruti Dev for both, since they use the same keys.

Do I need a Hindi keyboard or the Kruti Dev font installed?

No. Type on your normal English keyboard: the test turns your keys into Hindi as you type, for both layouts. If your computer already has a Hindi keyboard switched on, choose Mangal (InScript) and type with it as usual.

How is the speed calculated?

Five keystrokes, including spaces, count as one word. Gross speed is your keystrokes divided by five, per minute. Net speed takes one word per minute off for every mistake: each wrong, missed or extra word is one mistake.

How is accuracy calculated?

Accuracy is the share of words you got right among all the words compared: right, wrong, missed and extra. Skipping a word or adding one costs only that one word, not every word after it.

Can I use backspace?

Yes, backspace removes your last keystroke, and Ctrl+Backspace (Option+Backspace on a Mac) removes the last word. Keys you delete do not count towards your speed. Pasting is blocked, as in a real test.

Is my typing saved or sent anywhere?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser and your text never leaves your device. It is free with no sign-up and no limit on attempts.
