How to type in Bengali

Bengali (বাংলা) is written in Bengali (Bangla) script and is used across West Bengal, Tripura and Assam in India, and across Bangladesh. Its script has far more letters than the 26 on a QWERTY keyboard, which is why typing it normally means installing a keyboard layout and learning where every character sits.

This editor takes a different route. It transliterates word by word: you spell a word phonetically in English, press Space, and it is rewritten in Bengali (Bangla) script. Nothing is translated - the meaning and the sound stay exactly as you intended, only the script changes.

English has fewer sounds than Bengali, so one spelling can map to several valid words. When the result is not the one you wanted, press Backspace immediately after the word. On a computer a dropdown appears at the cursor: use the Up and Down arrow keys to highlight the right option and press Enter. On a phone or tablet the alternatives appear as buttons above the editor - just tap the one you want.

When you are finished, press Copy to put the text on your clipboard, or Download to save it as a .txt file. Your draft is also kept in this browser, so closing the tab by accident will not lose your work.

Bengali typing: common questions

How do I type in Bengali on an English keyboard?

Type the Bengali word the way it sounds using English letters, then press the space bar. For example, typing "nomoskar" and pressing space gives নমস্কার. You do not need a Bengali keyboard layout or any software — the conversion happens in your browser as you type.

Is this Bengali typing tool free?

Yes. Every feature is completely free and there is no account, sign-up, trial or payment. You can type as much Bengali text as you like, then copy it or download it as a text file.

What if the Bengali word that appears is wrong?

Press the backspace key right after a word converts and a list of alternative spellings appears. On desktop use the up and down arrow keys to highlight the one you want and press Enter; on a phone or tablet tap the suggestion you want from the bar above the editor.

Does this work on a mobile phone or tablet?

Yes. The editor works in any modern mobile browser on Android and iOS, as well as on Windows, macOS, Linux and Chromebooks. Suggestions appear as tappable buttons above the text box on touch devices.

Is my Bengali text private?

Your text stays in your browser. Individual words are sent to a transliteration service to be converted into Bengali (Bangla) script, but nothing you write is stored on our servers and there is no account tied to your text.

What is the difference between transliteration and translation?

This tool transliterates: it keeps the meaning and sound of the word and only changes the script, so "nomoskar" becomes নমস্কার in বাংলা. A translator would change an English sentence into a different Bengali sentence. Use this when you already know what you want to say in Bengali but do not have a Bengali keyboard.

Can I paste the Bengali text into WhatsApp, Word or Facebook?

Yes. Press the Copy button and paste the text anywhere — WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Gmail, Microsoft Word, Google Docs or any other app. The text is standard Unicode Bengali (Bangla) script, so it displays correctly on other devices.

Where can I download free Bengali fonts?

Our Bengali fonts page lets you preview every font in Bengali (Bangla) script before downloading it, and all of them are free to download and install on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
