Preeti to Unicode Converter
Paste text from a Preeti document and get Unicode Nepali that works everywhere. It converts as you type, in your browser.
Why convert Preeti to Unicode?
Preeti is a font trick: the document stores English letters and the font paints Nepali over them. That works only where Preeti is installed and only inside documents set in it. Send the text anywhere else and it turns into strings like g]kfn ;'Gb/ b]z xf].
Unicode stores the actual Nepali letters, so the same text works on Facebook, in Gmail and Google Docs, on websites and on phones, can be searched, and displays in any Nepali font.
How to convert a Preeti document
- Open the document in Word, select the Preeti text and copy it.
- Paste it into the left box. The Unicode version appears on the right straight away.
- Press Copy and paste the result back into your document or anywhere else.
- In Word, set the pasted text to a Unicode Nepali font such as Kalimati or Mangal.

Preeti to Unicode: common questions
What is Preeti?
Preeti is the older Nepali font most offices, schools and newspapers in Nepal used before Unicode. It draws Nepali letters in place of English ones: the file stores characters such as "g]kfn", and only the Preeti font makes them look like नेपाल. Unicode Nepali stores the real letters instead.
Why does my Nepali text turn into English letters when I copy it?
Because it was typed in Preeti. Outside a document set in the Preeti font - on Facebook, in an email or on a website - you see the underlying English characters. Converting it to Unicode fixes this permanently.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the text never leaves your device. It is free with no sign-up and no limit on length.
Does it work with Kantipur or other Nepali fonts?
It is built and checked for Preeti, glyph by glyph against the Preeti font. Fonts that copied Preeti's keyboard mostly convert correctly too, but check the first lines of the result. Fonts with a different layout, such as Sagarmatha, will not convert correctly.
How do I use the converted text in Microsoft Word?
Paste it into Word and select a Unicode Nepali font such as Kalimati, Mangal or Nirmala UI. Do not keep the Preeti font on Unicode text, or it will look broken.
