How the Bengali typing tutor works

  1. Rest your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;) and pick the first lesson.
  2. Click the lesson box and type what it shows. The next key is lit up on the keyboard below, with the Bengali (Bangla) script it types.
  3. A wrong key flashes red; press the right one to carry on. Every wrong key counts against your accuracy.
  4. Reach 90% accuracy to pass, then go on. The last lessons are Bengali words and sentences.

What the lessons teach

Each lesson adds two keys, starting from F and J on the home row, then the top and bottom rows, Shift, and the number row. In InScript, vowel signs are on the left hand and consonants on the right. Each lesson ends with real Bengali words that use only the keys learnt so far.

New to the letters? Start with the Bengali alphabet chart. When you finish the lessons, measure your speed with the timed Bengali typing test.

Bengali Typing Tutor: common questions

Which keyboard does the Bengali typing tutor teach?

InScript, the government-standard keyboard for every Indian script. Its keys type the same sounds in every Indian language, so once you know it for Bengali you can type the others too.

Do I need a Bengali keyboard installed?

No. Type on your normal English keyboard; the tutor shows the Bengali (Bangla) script each key types, and the on-screen keyboard shows the Bengali (Bangla) script letter on every key.

When is a lesson passed?

When you finish it with at least 90% accuracy. Every wrong key you press counts against your accuracy, even if you then press the right one, so slow down until you stop making mistakes.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, on this device. Passed lessons get a tick in the lesson list. Nothing is sent anywhere and there is no sign-up.

Can I use it on a phone?

The lessons need a physical keyboard, because they teach which finger presses which key. On a phone or tablet, connect a Bluetooth or USB keyboard.
